Family Experiential Camp

From the 1950s to the 1970s, many grassroots families in Hong Kong lived in resettlement blocks. Living conditions were modest, with cramped living spaces, no private toilets and no air conditioning. Despite these challenges, families worked side by side to make a living through home-based industries such as plastic flower making and envelope folding. Their perseverance, diligence and frugal way of life became a precious legacy passed on to the next generations.

This programme combines a guided tour of Heriage of Mei Ho House, oral history sharing by former residents, and interactive family activities. Participants will experience traditional home-based handicrafts, make nostalgic childhood toys, and learn about the daily lives of resettlement estate residents. Through these hands-on activities, families will discover how previous generations overcame challenges together while strengthening parent-child communication and family bonding.

Family Experiential Camp is divided into two parts:

First part - Heritage of Mei Ho House Guided Tour：

Led by a professional docent, participants will explore the history of Mei Ho House, the living conditions in Hong Kong's resettlement estates during the 1950s to 1970s, and the strong community spirit of the time. Through recreated settings, historical artefacts and oral history, families will gain a deeper understanding of the neighbourly support and mutual care that shaped everyday life.

Second part - Interactive Parent-Child Workshops

Through storytelling, interactive experiences and hands-on crafts, parents and children will discover the stories featured in "We Grew Up in Shek Kip Mei" (《美荷活現．香港精神–我們在石硤尾長大》). Participants will experience traditional home-based cottage industries and make nostalgic childhood toys, learning how residents of the 1950s to 1970s made the best use of limited resources, worked together and overcame daily challenges. The activities aim to strengthen family bonds while promoting the positive values of sharing, caring for others, perseverance and thrift.

1. By submitting an application or registering for the activity, participants are deemed to have read, understood and agreed to abide by the following Terms and Conditions.
2. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation email. Please present the electronic confirmation email for verification by staff on the event day.
3. Once registration is confirmed, no changes to the activity date or session, transfer of places, or cancellation will be accepted.
4. Participants are required to arrive 15 minutes before the activity starts. Latecomers may not be able to participate in part of the programme.
5. Children must be accompanied by a registered parent or guardian throughout the activity. Parents or guardians are responsible for the safety and conduct of the children in their care.
6. To ensure a pleasant experience for all participants and museum visitors, please do not run, make excessive noise, or engage in any behaviour that may disturb others in the museum.
7. Participants must follow the instructions of staff and take proper care of all museum exhibits and hostel facilities. HKYHA reserves the right to claim compensation for any loss or damage caused by negligence or misconduct.
8. Participants are responsible for their own personal belongings. HKYHA accepts no liability for any loss of or damage to personal property, or for any accidents occurring during the activity.
9. HKYHA reserves the right to amend, postpone or cancel the activity due to adverse weather, venue arrangements or other unforeseen circumstances. Affected participants will be notified as soon as practicable.
10. Audio recording, video recording or photography for commercial purposes is prohibited without the prior written consent of HKYHA.
11. HKYHA may take photographs and videos during the activity for record-keeping and promotional purposes. Participants who do not wish to be photographed or filmed should inform staff before the activity begins.
12. HKYHA reserves the right to amend the activity content, arrangements, and these Terms and Conditions at any time without prior notice. In the event of any dispute, HKYHA reserves the right of final decision.

The Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association (HKYHA) collects and processes the personal data provided by participants in accordance with the Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance. The information collected will be used solely for event registration, communication and related administrative purposes, and will be kept confidential and handled appropriately.
